AUTISM | JJ'S STORY

Within the broad spectrum of Autism, one would think there lies different abilities, strengths, weaknesses and failures. Whether diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome or given a diagnosis that will leave them unable to communicate or function normally the rest of their lives, it is the spectrum of this disease that we tend to focus on. I believe we need to shift that focus to the spectrum of the individual. What is their story? Let's savor details of their lives such as their quirks, what makes them laugh, who they connect with best, how they communicate in their own unique way.

My respect for children diagnosed with Autism began when I met a beautiful little girl named JJ in the spring of 2007. As her parents gently nudged her forward to meet one of the therapy horses at SonRise Equestrian Foundation, she clutched her first generation Blackberry phone tightly and peered into the horse's eyes in fear. But by her third visit to the ranch, JJ's fear began to subside and I was blessed to watch her flourish in the calm environment provided by the horses and volunteers.

Today, almost 8 years later, JJ and her family hold a special place in my heart. In April of 2014, I began a photo essay to show JJ's story in a new light. I wanted the world to see how her family and I see her—a silly and vibrant 17-year-old with mad swimming skills and pinpoint balance on a horse.

While I foresee this photo essay as never ending, it is my hope that I have already given JJ's story a voice. Every moment I spend with her challenges me to live differently, think positively and love unconditionally just as she does, and I hope these images challenge you to do the same.
